Selected Poems of Bengt Berg (Set One)

If the world did notexist
If the world did notexist the mosquitoes offishing rod night have any inquisitivechildren to suck a few drops ofblood from
If the world didn'texist the sun would have nosummer′s lake to cool its cheek in
If the world didn'texist no one would be ableto say: "You, let's go!"
If the world didn'texist many things would besimpler but of no use
If the world didn'texist no one would haveanyone to waltz with, no one to bend theirback to, no one to make moneyfrom, no one to comfort, no one to kill, no one to have anyoneto feed
If the world didn'texist we wouldn't have tofight for it to exist, toexist even tomorrow with allthe unknown smiles and allpossible possibilities
If the world didn'texist oblivion would reign, silence would ring
If the world did notexist no hands would beclasped in a little woodenchurch right next to the greyrolling waves of the sea
If the world did notexist no one would besitting in their heated car and curse the queuesinto the city center
If the world didn'texist no one would besitting at the back of the classroom giggling on ahopelessly dreary Thursday
If the world didn'texist the weapons ofdestruction would no longer beneeded
If the world did notexist love's heated embracewould be, the throbbing pulse ofblood, would be beyond lightand darkness
If the world did notexist, you think, I think – but now the world exists, you exist, I exist and all the others next toand around us: exist! We exist with all thepossibilities of defiance, with the providentialpower of hope And even an old waterbucket, filled to the brimwith longing, is there
About time and space
Reading in that book that time is on itsway from two directions atonce The time of our timeis an instant, a blink of a tenth, a brief encounter and all is past
In another book I read that the house isround, that the walls on theoutside are made of skin, inside of songs thatnever can be silenced
