Ten Short Poems by Kong Yejing
Tr. by Wang Changling
1. Love is Frozen into a Block of Ice
This season is too cold
Love is prone to be frozen
Into a block of ice
You cannot pry open a closed mouth
Loneliness is getting
Harder and harder
Like a stone on the chest
Endless kisses in dreams
Turn into tears
That wet the pillow
Now you are wide awake
2. The Whole Winter
One snowfall after another
Covers up the whole winter
The persistent cold
Freezes the flying wings
No pathlet in sight
Can ever access the sleepless night
A lonesome figure slips aground
And stands up, assisted by the wind
Staggering
Unable to enter anyone’s dream
Lovesickness piling up
Spreads at the bed head
A woolen blanket over a down-filled quilt
Still fails to warm up
The coldness at dawn
3. Tonight, I’m Stung by a Word
--Written on Valentine’s Day in 2014
A fall of snow buries spring deep
Not even breezy
One rose after another
Like amorous women
Cat-walking in the street in chilly February
Who ignite the urban twilight
Who bit by bit force out the cold in my heart
Whose slow steps
Tread upon and crush endless whispers
I’m afraid of a word
That’s hidden behind the petals
Like the sting of a bee
That stings the out-stretched hand
The oozing blood is invisible
Yet acute is the unutterable pain
4. Sit within a Poem
I can’t spin silk
Like a silkworm
To envelop my self
And shut the world out
All day long, faced up with
Myriad entanglements of life
I fail to untie
The tightening ties
Just let my tired soul
Sit within a poem
Transposing a few words
Yet getting caught in a gust of wind
5. Reverse
The sleepless night
Imposes sleepiness onto the dawn
Ever since, black and white
Are reversed
And life is thus disorganized
You cannot be so assertive
About what’s right or wrong
With the entangling world affairs
What if time was reversible?
How do I wish to return
To the original
Innocence!
6. My Faceful of Homesickness is Unwashable
Each day, more than once
Facing a mirror
I repeatedly wash and scrub my face
A basin of clean water
Cannot wash off my faceful of homesickness
My hometown is like a soap bubble in my palm
A slight touch
Breaks it
The thinner-than-paper skin
Is taut all the more
With a thick layer of powder and rouge
I apply some joy onto my face
7. A Nightmare
A moth
Bit the thick cocoon open
It was too dark for anyone to see
That I was that moth
Plunging into a huge net
The more I struggled
The more tightly I was entangled
Oh, I’m doomed
That night, a spider
Slept tight
At dawn
I escaped
8. Right and Wrong
By rights
Right and wrong
Are opponents
If not foes
Yet they often collude
Sit together
Drinking deep
When drunk
They are thick as thieves
9. The Moon Cannot Understand my Sorrow
Seated atop a mountain at sunset
I’m gazing into the direction of my hometown
Like a stone, the setting sun
Is sinking
Taking away all the clouds in the sky
And the homebound cows and sheep
Leaving the grassland empty and silent
Loneliness I’ve never known before
Is like a stray dog
Gnawing at a past event harder than a stone
Nosily
The decrescent moon
Cannot understand my sorrow
10. A Stone
The sharper-than-knife wind
Fails to slit open a closed mouth
So much has been said
Nothing more to be said
An iron hammer
With all its possible might
Fails to awake
The dream longer than night
If forced up
It only stands as a tombstone
Sticking with the dead
Is so safe
